Electric Taxi Scheme Announced

Punjab’s Transport Minister Bilal Yasin has revealed the launch of a new electric taxi scheme that focuses on both employment generation and sustainable travel. The initiative will officially become operational within the next 15 daysand aims to provide income opportunities for unemployed individuals.

Ownership on Easy Instalments

According to officials, the scheme will introduce electric taxis and bikes. These vehicles will be offered to citizens on interest-free instalments, making them affordable for people from low-income backgrounds who otherwise cannot own a vehicle.

Announcement at Transport Expo

The announcement was made during Pakistan’s first Transport Expo, held under the Transport 2030 Vision. This vision represents the province’s long-term plan for modern, eco-friendly, and accessible transportation.

Lahore’s First Tram Service

Alongside the taxi scheme, Bilal Yasin also shared updates on Lahore’s first tram project. The tram is expected to begin operations by February next year, initially covering Jail Road and Main Boulevard, with planned extensions to Canal Road in the future.

Electric Buses and Depots

The Transport Expo further outlined the construction of 41 modern depots across Punjab. Starting in December 2025, the province will begin deploying electric buses, with a plan to introduce 1,100 electric buses and trams by 2030. Testing of autonomous vehicles is also part of the roadmap.

Infrastructure and Sustainability Goals

To support these projects, the government is working on the installation of 1,000 electric vehicle charging stations. The Transport 2030 Vision aims to convert 80% of Punjab’s transport network to electric by the year 2030. The electric taxi scheme will play a central role in meeting this goal.

Sindh’s Green Transport Initiative

In a parallel move, the Sindh Workers Welfare Board has announced the distribution of 10,000 free electric motorcycles to female industrial workers. According to Sindh Labour Minister Shahid Thaheem, the program is designed to improve women’s mobility and promote sustainable transport solutions across the province.
